Lamborghini Confirms Electric Urus Is Coming… Eventually

The Lamborghini Urus is one of the most powerful and expensive SUVs currently on sale. This, it seems, is not enough for some customers as the Italian company is developing a more hardcore version, which is expected to debut later this year. However, if you’re expecting a fully electric version – we’ll have to let you down. It may be coming but most likely, not with this generation of Urus.

Drive recently had the opportunity to sit down with Lamborghini design boss Mitja Borkert and talk about many different topics. Among them was the question of a potential zero-emissions variant of the super-SUV, of which Borkert initially confirmed an EV but later backtracked a bit.

“Sooner or later Urus will become electric… to be honest, the rules in the world as well as social acceptance – the trend will definitely be like this,” the designer told the Australian publication. “I didn’t say it. now the Urus successor is electric, but for this type of car electrification makes more sense.”

It’s hard to say exactly what Borkert’s words mean, but we can say that the executives from Sant’Agata Bolognese are at least considering an electric Urus. It looks like it definitely won’t be ready with this generation’s model. This may mean – given the fact that its successor won’t arrive before 2028 – we will have to wait at least until the end of the decade to see the Urus EV.

As far as the rest of the Lamborghini lineup is concerned, Borkert insists the company will offer combustion power as long as possible from a legal point of view. The switch to an electric powertrain, however, is inevitable. “People today are still being trained that the V10 is emotional, but I don’t know if in forty years young people will still be happy with this. I’m also someone who loves combustion engines, but I’m not afraid of moving to electric. “
