Southern Utah is famous for many reasons – interesting geology, Native American history, and some stunning national parks. Less known is its fairly brilliant network of off-road trails, with most people heading north to Moab. But for those in the know, the city of St. George is just a stone’s throw away from some pretty cool obstacles – including the terrifying Chute, an almost vertical stone wall with some serious wrinkling factor.
Chute can tax even the most well-equipped trail rigs (as well as their drivers), which is why it’s impressive to see an old tow truck from the Reagan Administration handle it. Found on Alligator Performance’s Facebook page, this video pinpoints that: a square-bodied Chevrolet double tow truck, creeping up the Chute without a problem. The driver of the Chevy K30 – David Hellman, if the video commentary is to be believed – provided a master class in off-road skills, picking a near-perfect line over obstacles and executing impressively throttle control to crawl over rocks.
If it was David who was driving the dual vehicle down the trail, he was clearly experienced. His Instagram has dozens of videos showing the truck taking various Utah routes. He’s also used hooks to help recover stuck rigs, though whenever it’s a Toyota or Jeep, you can bet the full-size Chevy driver has some fun boos in his arsenal.
The Chevy in question is one of the most popular variants in the world enthusiast. The square body design was built between 1973 and 1991, making it one of the longest-running vehicle generations in history. David’s truck specs weren’t immediately clear, but there’s definitely a petrol V8 under the hood and sturdy front and rear axles. It got the grille from the 1981 and 1982 model Chevrolet trucks, but that could be added later along with those aftermarket LED headlights.
Whatever the case, the double tow truck is one of the more exciting trail rigs we’ve seen out there, made even more impressive by how stress-free and relaxed it looks on the Chute. This is for a full-size truck that tackles more of those kinds of obstacles.
