Judging by the main image alone, you might be tempted to say this is a clickbait title and article. However, what you will see in the video at the top of this page is indeed a radio-controlled scale model of a Volvo military vehicle. And he does a wonderful job of crawling the little rocks in what looks like a special playground for scale models.
If you’re curious about what this Volvo model looks like, here’s a little background. This is what the Swedish brand produces as the Cross Country C303, a family of military vehicles developed in the late 1960s. Production began in 1974 with two versions available – 4×4 and 6×6 – with the one from the video clearly being four-wheeled.
Several versions of the C303 were sold to civilian customers and used as special service vehicles. In 1983, the example of a Volvo truck even won the Paris-Dakar rally in the under 10 ton truck class. In total, 8,718 vehicles were assembled, about 75 percent of which were delivered to provide different military services. The rest is sold to private customers.
Powering the military Volvo truck is a 3.0-liter V6 engine sourced from Volvo’s passenger cars. The output of this engine is 125 horsepower (93 kilowatts) in standard form, although the truck uses a slightly lowered version with 117 hp (87 kW). Respectively, maximum torque drops from 165 pound-feet (224 Newton-meters) to 152 lb-ft (206 Nm) in the military version.
That C303 the family has enormous ground clearance, much like the legendary Mercedes-Benz Unimog. In addition, the portal axle with differential lock provides outstanding off-road performance. As you can see from the video, the same off-road greatness can be achieved from the detailed scale replica of the truck.
