VW Never Built Golf R With Audi RS3 Inline-Five Engine But An Enthusiast Did It

When Volkswagen started working on the Golf R MK8, the guys from Wolfsburg asked their Audi counterparts if they could use the 2.5-liter TFSI engine from the Audi RS3, although they received negative answers. It’s probably safe to say we’ll never see a performance Golf with an inline-five from the factory, but that doesn’t mean VW fans won’t be building it. In fact, the Golf R MK7 2.5 TFSI already exists and is featured in a new video.

Attached at the top of this page, the 12-minute clip introduces us to Kavin, the owner of the white hot hatch, asking Innovative Motorsports to swap his Golf R engine for a 2.5-liter inline-five from Audi. “I never intended to modify it, but one thing led to another. I started modding, modding, modding, and note the four-cylinder exhaust doesn’t suit me. And that’s how it all started. VW wasn’t going to build a five-cylinder Golf R but Kavin did.

Innovative Motorsports is a company that specializes in swapping RS3 engines for Golf MK7s. The whole process took about five weeks and started with a faulty RS3, which was used as the engine donor. Almost all of the hardware was replaced, including the engine, transmission, and even the subframe for that matter. We’re pleased to hear that the end result is a fully functional five-cylinder Golf R without instrument cluster lights and fully emission compatible.

The best part is that no fabrication is required as the Audi RS3 and Golf R are based on the same MQB platform. This means that almost the entire procedure is not that difficult as the engine and transmission go straight into the car. Wiring and software is probably the hardest part as the entire engine compartment is basically reassembled.

But how much does such a project cost? Well, according to owner Kavin, it really depends and what you have and what you want to achieve. In his case, he managed to sell his old engine, transmission, and rear differential to recoup some of the money he spent on the RS3. The range is huge – you can go anywhere from $15,000 to nearly $80,000, depending on what you can do to yourself and what you put in the car.
