- Bentley’s new trademark hints at a possible name for its new electric SUV.
- Bentley files a trademark for ‘Barnato.’
- Most likely it was in honor of Woolf Barnato, one of the original ‘Bentley Boys’.
Bentley is preparing a new electric SUV. The model was supposed to debut last year, but the automaker had to delay it until 2026. Details are still unknown, including the name, but a recent trademark filing may reveal the model’s potential name—Barnato.
The car, called the Barnato, will slot below the Bentley Bentayga, the automaker’s best-selling model, when it goes on sale. This car will also be smaller with a fully electric powertrain. That applicationfiled with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in August 2025, is aimed at vehicles and charging accessories. The original patent revealed by Car and Driver.

The name Barnato likely honors Woolf Barnato, one of the original “Bentley Boys.” He served as managing director of the company from 1926 to 1931. He also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times, once in a Bentley 4½ Liter and twice in a Bentley Speed Six.
The new SUV will be the automaker’s first electric vehicle. Bentley announced the model in 2024, publishing a single teaser image highlighting its silhouette. It looks like it will be a smaller Bentayga, and that’s not a bad thing. This large SUV accounts for more than 40 percent of the car’s sales.
When the Barnato debuts later this year, it will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s PPE EV platform, which also underpins the Audi Q6 E-Tron and Porsche Macan Electric. Specific powertrain details remain a mystery. We’ll have to wait to find out more, including his name.
Motorcycle Pickup1: Bentley Barnato is a powerful name that also honors the company’s beginnings in a unique way, but the trademark filing is not proof, just an indication. Bentley may have prepared another name for its electric SUV.
