Music plays a very important role in our life. It can change our emotions and feelings in just a few minutes. It can also reduce our stress, pain, and struggles and generally bring positivity into our daily lives. It can also bring people together in various ways and help them have fun. But according to Kia, music can also affect the way we drive electric vehicles.
The British division of the South Korean company conducted the survey in collaboration with leading authorities in the fields of acoustics, noise, psychoacoustics and sound science. In general, research results reveal that the type of music the audio system plays in an EV can affect the driving range in the real world.

For testing, Kia used a top-range version of the EV6 which is equipped with a 14-speaker premium audio system from Meridian Audio. All participants had no previous experience with electric vehicles and were asked to get behind the wheel and complete a predetermined 18-mile route. During the test course, a playlist continued to play featuring various genres of music and popular songs.
From the research, Kia found that music can have a “dramatic effect” on the distance driving electric vehicles in the real world. Classical music was proven to provide the best EV driving range in the car tested with participants driving up to four times more efficiently while listening to Beethoven than any other music genre. On the other hand, higher tempo pop songs, like ‘Blinding Lights’ from The Weeknd, result in a more vibrant driving style, which makes the car twice as inefficient.
“What we found from just two days of testing is that music can actually have a dramatic effect on the distance driving electric vehicles in the real world,” Duncan Williams, lecturer in the University of Salford School of Science, Engineering and the Environment. , summarized. “In short: if you want to go a step further, listen to Beethoven and other relaxing classical music; If you’re not worried about dropping the range a little faster, by all means, put some higher tempo tracks on.
