With the CX-60, Mazda is introducing the first of several next-generation models that will use the new Skyactiv Multi Solution Scalable Architecture. It is a RWD architecture that can support a six-cylinder engine and a plug-in hybrid powertrain. There have been rumors of a next-generation Mazda6 switching to rear-wheel drive – and the new crossover has fueled more speculation – although, it doesn’t appear that the sedan will be rear-wheel-powered any time soon.
Mazda Europe engineering and development boss Joachim Kunz recently spoke with car and admit a Mazda6 RWD would be absolutely awesome, but the market has changed a lot in recent years, and selling crossovers and SUVs is far more important than owning a good premium sedan. The Kunz essentially ruled out a rear-wheel-drive sedan from Mazda, contrary to reports from the last two years.
“It would be great… to have a FR [front-engine, rear-driven] concept and a six-cylinder engine for the successor to the Mazda6 or a large sports coupe,” Kunz told the British magazine. “We’d love to have it, but at this point, the most important thing is to sell the SUV. This SUV trend continues, even more so for Mazda. It’s the best seller.”
From what we can understand, for now, the current generation Mazda6 will likely stay on sale for at least a few more years. Mazda Australia marketing director Alastair Doak recently confirmed to Drive “There are some updates in progress for that.” There doesn’t appear to be a planned successor for now or, at the very least, it won’t ride on the new RWD platform.
With the Mazda6 RWD basically sidelined, car reported on the rumored RX-9 sports coupe that wouldn’t materialize either. There is speculation that Mazda will develop a two-door version of the new Mazda6 that uses the same RWD platform and is powered by a new generation of six-line engines, which debuted with the CX-60 crossover.
