Mini Brings Its Giant EV Charger to the Los Angeles Auto Show

Charging is probably the second most confusing thing about electric vehicles for future owners after range anxiety. There’s no better way to overcome that fear than to talk to people and show them a good example, and Mini has decided the Los Angeles Auto Show is a good place to let the world know that charging EVs isn’t all that scary. And the British manufacturer has made quite a statement with its giant electric vehicle charger displayed near the Los Angeles Convention Center, at 698 West Olympic Boulevard at the corner of Flower Street.

The size of the charging station isn’t the only thing that impresses. As you can easily see from the attached photo, the shape is an RC controller and Mini says it’s inspired by the world of radio controlled cars. The charger will work today and tomorrow (18-19 November) and EV owners interested in using it should find a parking space with the message “Out-fun the competition”. There are also spray paint arrows on the floor with the message “Fill this way”.

This large charger with RC control shape is approx. 9 feet (2.75 meters) tall and comes in the same color as the Mini Cooper SE as a new addition to the palette – Nanuq White. There is a contrasting “roof” in the form of the top which is painted black. At the bottom, there is a 10-inch interactive screen with a promotional video from the automaker. Scanning the QR code takes you to the AR page to explore the Mini’s electric range.

“At Mini, we always want to bring out a spark of joy that reminds people of the fun and creativity inherent in the Mini culture,” said Rah Mahtani, Brand Communications Manager at Mini USA. “We strive to keep the fun and excitement alive for everyone who loves to drive, and this project brings together today’s electric vehicle ideas with our collective nostalgia for the electric RC cars of our youth.”

Once the show is over, the giant charger will be touring various locations across the United States and several local Mini dealers throughout California.
