Chevy Astro Camper Conversion Is A Stealthy Weekend Adventure Machine

Scott and Carla took the all-wheel-drive 1998 Chevrolet Astro Van and turned it into a pint-sized camper for weekend adventures. This video offers a tour highlighting the impressive use of space in this attractive building.

From the outside, you wouldn’t know this was a camper conversion. The only modifications are a mountable awning, an outlet for attaching solar panels to a Jackery solar generator, and a set of aftermarket wheels.

Things get interesting when you open the door. The entire roof has cedar panels, which creates a cozy look. The floor is a rubber interior that looks like wood. There is styrofoam insulation on the top and foam insulation on the walls.

The wall opposite the door has an interesting wardrobe. This includes a wooden table. The sink is just a metal salad bowl with a hole in the bottom. On the left, there is an area for storing food and clothes. There is even a hidden area that serves as a dumping ground for dirty clothes.

The bed transforms from a sitting area to a sleeping area. At about 42 inches (106.7 centimeters) wide, it is slightly wider than a twin bed. It’s tight enough for two adults. Plus, they have an 80-pound (36.3 kilogram) German Shepard. The solution is to add an extra mattress at night that provides a place for the puppy to rest.

For entertainment, there is a ceiling-mounted projector, and couples can mount the screen behind the front seats. A small refrigerator serves as a center console.

Opening the rear hatch reveals a solar generator that provides all the electricity, and is connected to a breaker. The drawer at the back holds the gas stove and fuel. The little spice rack in the door is a smart touch.

So far, Scott and Carla have used the van to stay at the campground. They want to go on vacation in the wilderness at some point. Another plan is to use the vehicle as a base for a snowboarding trip. Eventually, they wanted to take this rig on a trip across Canada.
