With advances in technology, even dirt-loving SUVs are now more comfortable to play on off-road fields. Case in point: The new Land Rover Range Rover. This raises the question of whether these improvements make this SUV better off-road.
But can the venerable Toyota Land Cruiser beat the tech-packed RR in the off-road battle? To answer that, carwow pits the two in a pre-built course, with a series of challenges to test the metrics relative to off-road. For the record, the Land Cruiser here is an older generation model, which originally came out in 2007.

First, let’s talk about numbers. There are many engine options for the Land Cruiser J200 but the one used in this duel is said to be powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 diesel engine producing 272 horsepower (203 kilowatts) and 479 pound-feet (650 Newtons). -meters) torque. It is equipped with useful features for off-roading, such as a center locking differential and a low-range gearbox.
Meanwhile, the new Land Rover Range Rover uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that produces 530 hp (395 kW) of power and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of traction. It’s lighter than the Land Cruiser and certainly comes with too many off-road features to list here.
These two giant machines take on six off-road challenges in carwowtest, which begins with an uphill drag race. There are also downhill battles aimed at demonstrating the vehicle’s drop control, while maneuverability courses test their turning radius. Meanwhile, a course called “axle twisters” checks the SUV’s suspension travel, chassis articulation, ground clearance, and approach/departure angles, while a side-tilt test shows how they go on an incline. The steep uphill climb ends a series of tests.
