Volvo EX90 Reveals Dashboard With Two Screens, Minimalist Design

The Volvo EX90 will debut as a brand new flagship on November 9. The automaker has teased a new electric SUV, detailing the various technologies it plans to incorporate into the model. At the heart of the experience is the dashboard, which was officially teased by Volvo.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Volvo dashboard. The published patent image reveals the design, and it matches the real world product. It will display a small screen in front of the driver, displaying relevant info such as speed, range and direction. The larger center screen provides access to the car navigation system, media, phone and vehicle controls. The screens are contextual, changing when you’re parking, driving, or on a call.

Volvo says these screens will be critical to building trust between driver and vehicle, especially as cars begin to take over various driving functions. The automaker wanted these screens “to make your life easier and safer, rather than create more distraction or confusion.” The screen will present relevant and contextual information in a simplified way that tells the driver what the car expects of them.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the interior. Last week, the automaker teased the upholstery and dashboard trim for announcing it would use sustainable materials wherever possible. The EX90 will also contain approximately 110 pounds (50 kilograms) of bio-based materials and recycled plastic. The company will also install radar into the cabin to detect sleeping children and pets accidentally left in the vehicle.

On the outside, the Volvo will have a series of sensors that will work with interior sensors to better “understand” the driver. The exterior has cameras, lasers, radar and ultrasonic sensors. Volvo has built-in software that runs everything, processing all data from inside and outside the vehicle to ensure drivers are paying attention and driving safely.

We will get all the details and the full look of the EX90 on November 9. Details about the battery and motor remain a mystery.
