Mercedes-AMG GT 53 Coupe Spyed Can’t Hide PHEV Powertrain

Mercedes is preparing a new coupe, and our spy photographer snapped it during testing. The photos show the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 Coupe, which looks sleek even with all the covers on. It will be a fixed roof companion for the new SL.

The Mercedes hides the styling of the car under a camouflage wrap, covering almost everything except the roof. Many of the finer styling details remain hidden, with the cladding at the front distorting the car’s athletic face. However, this coupe has a wide grille located above the wide bottom grille opening. Perforations in the front camo show the fascia has large intakes on the outer edge of the bumper.

There isn’t much distortion at the rear, with the thin taillights partially obscured by camouflage. The plug-in hybrid powertrain is easy to spot, with the charging door clearly visible on the rear bumper. The round exhaust sets this GT apart from others we’ve seen, with the square ends of the top-tier AMG GT 63 variant quite visible in other spy shots.

Powertrain details remain a mystery, but the car should receive the same setup as the AMG C63 SE Performance. That means the AMG GT 53, which will likely be named the AMG GT 53 SE Performance, will get a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor to produce a combined 671 horsepower (493 kilowatts). A plug-in hybrid with a V8 would sit at the top of the range, perhaps delivering over 800 hp (588 kW).

We haven’t seen the interior of the car yet, but it should be similar to the SL. However, we don’t expect the GT to get a tilted infotainment screen from the SL. The two cars will share a platform and some components, but have a different mission than Mercedes. The new GT will be a sporty and track-capable car, while the SL will offer a more comfortable luxury cruising experience.

Mercedes hasn’t said when the new GT could debut, but we expect the reveal to happen sometime next year. The ultimate variant of the PHEV V8 is likely to arrive later, joining the lineup after Mercedes launched another version. The automaker will only offer the GT as a coupe as Mercedes is discontinuing the Roadster GT and effectively replacing it with the new SL.
