The 2024 BMW X2 is again spied on in a more powerful M35i trim

It’s been a busy 24 hours for the next generation BMW X2. A few glimpses of the prototype let us get a good look at the small crossover in no time. While it’s still heavily camouflaged, it will deviate greatly from the current model.

That was made clear in our first X2 post on October 11, where it was incorrectly identified as the new X4. Designers made some major changes to the rear of the new model, especially with the sloping roof and hatches at the rear. Combined with a higher belt line, the new X2 adopts a style similar to that of the X4, making it look more like a crossover coupe than a compact hatchback. Up front, we see a wider, deeper grille and smaller headlights, although we don’t expect the split-light setup used on the larger BMW models.

Two of our spy photo teams captured some of the X2 test vehicles in action in Germany. Of particular interest here is a car with lighter wheels and a 3463 license plate. This appears to be an M35i model at the top of the Nurburgring-licking range, riding on wide tires with big brakes clearly visible behind the big wheels.

At the rear, it’s impossible to miss the quad exhaust pipe that oozes out of the lower fascia. Such a setup is usually reserved for full-fat M models, but at the moment we don’t believe BMW will offer the X2 M. A larger spoiler sits at the bottom of the hatch, and moving forward, seems more aggressive. fascia will decorate the front. BMW’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is likely behind it, producing a little over 300 horsepower.

The current X2 has been around since 2018, so it will mark a new generation for the little Bimmer. The appearance of this prototype of course points to the new model receiving again than just an evolutionary change, and supports rumors that the X4 will be dropped. By adopting stylistic cues from its larger sibling, the larger X2 crossover could fill the void at a lower price point.

Despite the flurry of recent prototype sightings, it will likely be months before the camo comes off. Right now, we’re expecting a reveal late next year as the 2024 model. Until then, get your fix on automotive news and fun comments at Chatting About Cars podcast, available below.
