Porsche 718 Cayman EV Spy Video

  • Footage taken at the Nürburgring shows Porsche still testing the 718 EV.
  • The Cayman prototype has minimal camouflage.
  • An electric Boxster is also planned.

The electric 718 could break the record for having the longest development schedule in Porsche history. Prototypes were first seen in November 2022, by which time the Boxster/Cayman EV had been in development for several years. As of 2026, the production car is still nowhere to be seen, but a new spy video shows that the project still hasn’t been abandoned.

Porsche was spotted at the Nürburgring pushing a Cayman coupe prototype with a bit of camouflage. It still looks like a mini 911, and the yellow sticker in the top left corner of the rear window shows its electrified nature. This test vehicle flaunts a rear spoiler and appears to have all the production body panels in place.

However, Zuffenhausen has mastered the art of disguise using fake panels and body-colored camouflage, so we’ll withhold judgment until the officials reveal it. As for timing, Porsche CEO Michael Leiters recently said we’ll learn more about the 718 EV this fall. Speaking at the company’s annual conference earlier this month, he praised the Boxster/Cayman electric duo and the team behind it: “a great car and the guys did a great job working on it.”

When it finally arrives, it will compete in an already scarce segment. There are almost no two-door electric performance vehicles outside the world of supercars and hypercars. The MG Cyberster will be joined by the next generation Alpine A110 at the end of this year or 2027. The Audi Concept C will arrive next year as a sister model to the 718 EV.

Meanwhile, the spy video also shows a number of other interesting performance cars undergoing testing at Green Hell. There’s everything from the BMW M5 to the Toyota GR Yaris, along with the electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and the new GT Black Series announced yesterday.

It’s a 13-minute reminder that fun cars aren’t dead, even as the segment shrinks as more buyers gravitate toward SUVs. While Porsche seems confident there will be enough demand for the electric Boxster and Cayman to justify the development costs, they know that won’t convince everyone. The solution? Bringing back the gas-powered 718 at the end of the decade.
