Smoking can be bad for your health in more ways than one and this Russian man learned his lesson the hard way. CCTV footage from Chelyabinsk shows second-generation Renault Logan driver setting himself on fire after lighting a cigarette in the worst of locations. While refueling his subcompact sedan, the owner decides to smoke, thus ignoring what his chemistry teacher at school says.
The incident happened on July 23 in west-central Russia, and needless to say it could have ended much worse. The small sedan which had been slightly damaged caught fire immediately but luckily the gas tank didn’t explode, and the man was able to get into the car and move it to a safer place. We can see him returning to the scene to put out the fire using a gas station fire extinguisher.
Local media reported he suffered multiple injuries to his leg and is currently in hospital, but will be fine after a skin graft. This video is a little reminiscent of why lighting a cigarette at a gas station is always a bad idea, and while this man lives to tell his fiery story, the results can be quite tragic. Not only for him, but also for the gas station employees and other drivers who were refueling their vehicles at the time.
This is the reason why almost all gas stations around the world have a “no smoking” sign – to avoid this kind of reckless behavior. Refueling a petrol or diesel car takes three to four minutes, so the next cigarette can definitely wait until the smoker reaches a safer zone where there is no fire hazard.
