Ford continues to build the Mustang GTD, and reportedly will do so for the next three years. The next application window opens on April 17. This actually coincides with the Mustang’s 62nd birthday.
That April 17 date dates back to the Mustang’s official debut at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. If you could put someone from that day in a time machine and show them the GTD, I can only assume their heads would literally explode.
The Mustang GTD is basically a GT3 race car in street car clothing. You have a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine that produces 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Ford developed a car with a 50-50 weight distribution. The suspension system uses adaptive spool valve dampers and a rear pushrod arrangement. And there’s excessive use of carbon fiber body panels.
There’s also a $300,000 starting price tag. But even if you have the cash, Ford handpicks its buyers through this application process. If you’ve got the dough and Ford thinks you’ve got the dough, maybe you’ll get lucky.
Motor Pickup1: The Mustang GTD is truly a feat of evil engineering. In fact, there may be news of a more powerful variant soon as rumors are circulating that Ford has just leveled the playing field faster time around the Nürburgring.
Maybe that’s something to wait for if you’re planning on proposing.
