As discussed previously, General Motors is rolling out a major in-vehicle software upgrade that introduces Google Gemini to millions of vehicles, and is expected to significantly improve the in-car digital experience. This update applies to 2022 and newer vehicles equipped with Google built-in from across the Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC brands, replacing the currently used Google Assistant system. Now, Google has outlined what features to expect when the update rolls out.

In essence, the new Gemini system is designed to enable more natural and context-aware interactions with drivers and passengers. For example, the system can provide detailed, real-time assistance by helping drivers find restaurants, scenic rest stops, or parking spaces. It can also take into account preferences such as vegetarian food, as well as identify traffic conditions or even flag nearby events that could impact the journey. Drivers can also report road hazards using voice input.
Communication features are also more sophisticated. Gemini can summarize incoming messages, compose replies, and enter estimated arrival times automatically. If the driver changes his mind in the middle of a response, the system can revise the message. Access to entertainment and information has also been expanded, so drivers can request music in a broad sense (such as a specific genre) or with more specific requests (“upbeat 70s folk-rock”).

There’s also Gemini Live, a beta feature that introduces a more open conversation mode. By saying “Hey Google, let’s chat,” drivers can engage in back-and-forth dialogue, such as learning about destinations or exchanging ideas about activities once they arrive.
Apart from infotainment, Gemini is also integrated with vehicle systems. Drivers can ask model-specific questions, such as how to prepare an automatic car wash or adjust the liftgate height, with answers taken directly from the vehicle owner’s manual. In electric vehicles, the system provides battery-related insights, including charging estimates upon arrival, nearby charging locations, and suggestions for places to visit while charging.
Expect the Gemini infotainment update to roll out to compatible GM models in the next few months.
