GM is expanding its suite of in-vehicle technologies with a significant software update that brings Google Gemini to millions of cars already on the road. The launch targets 2022 model year and newer Chevy, Cadillac, Buick and GMC vehicles equipped with Google built-in, marking one of the largest automotive deployments of conversational AI to date.
This update replaces the current Google Assistant experience with Gemini, a more advanced system designed for natural, context-aware interactions. Rather than relying on clunky voice commands, drivers can speak conversationally, ask follow-up questions, and change topics without restarting the interaction. The system processes requests sequentially, allowing users to fine-tune navigation routes, customize entertainment, or explore new topics in a single dialog.

GM says the scale of the rollout is made possible by its connected vehicle infrastructure. “Gemini provides AI assistance to millions of drivers in every segment and price point for a wide range of everyday needs,” said Tim Twerdahl, Global Vice President of Product Management at GM. He added, “Such a scale is only possible because of the connected vehicle foundation that GM has built through OnStar over the last 30 years.”
Functionally, the Gemini expands what drivers can do without taking their hands off the wheel. It can summarize and translate text messages, generate responses with contextual awareness, and incorporate elements such as emojis on request. Entertainment options are also increasingly dynamic. Drivers can request a playlist tailored to the duration of the trip or mood, or request a summary of a podcast before listening in full.

Navigation gains similar benefits. Users can create routes with multiple stops, fine-tune them mid-trip, and request specific preferences, such as fuel cost optimization or minimal detours. For commercial users, this adds a layer of logistical support that goes beyond basic turn-by-turn directions.
The system also supports wider use of conversations. Drivers can brainstorm ideas, practice conversations, or learn about destinations in real time. GM is positioning this as a way to make idling driving time more productive without increasing distractions.

The Gemini update will roll out over several months. Owners of eligible vehicles will receive notification via their infotainment system when the software becomes available. Requirements include an active OnStar connection, a signed-in Google account, and opting in to the Gemini experience.
The deployment represents an additional step toward deeper AI integration in GM vehicles, and the company indicated that the more sophisticated and knowledgeable assistant OnStar will follow later this year.
