Remember the Ferrari F125 TDE seen in the UAE in May last year? This wild creation goes by another name as it has made its official debut at Yas Marina as Veloqx Fangio. If this association of words sounds foreign, the final word should be, “Veloqx” is a motorsport team. He won at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2004 while also finishing in second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with an R8.
“Fangio” is a tribute to the iconic five-time F1 championship winner, Juan Manuel Fangio. He also competed in the two endurance races we mentioned above, as well as in the 24 Hours of Spa. In addition, he won the 1953 Carrera Panamericana. The legendary Argentine racer competed for Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati, and Mercedes, plus for some dead cars like Gordini and Talbot-Lago.
Now that it’s settled, what exactly is Veloqx Fangio? The press release has not yet been published, but the sister site Motorsport.com spoke to British team founder Sam Li last year. The plan is that the race in 2025 will use a track-only engine powered by a Ferrari V12 engine. Interestingly, the powertrain is being modified to use a variety of fuels, including biofuels. A “variable emission no-fuel combustion engine” is planned, along with a low-volume road car.
Initial tests took place last year at the Bahrain International Circuit and have now been filmed in Abu Dhabi on Yas Island where the circuit was built in 2009. The Veloqx Fangio looks crazy and runs on an LMP2 spec slick. The ultra-aggressive body kit serves the functional purpose of maximizing aerodynamics after three years of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research.
Its gigantic front divider looks like it could easily double as a snow plug, while the rear diffuser is reminiscent of a tractor aerator. Judging from the interior, the Veloqx Fangio has more than just an engine borrowed from Ferrari as it appears to be based on the F12, possibly a version of the F12tdf. However, it still cannot be confirmed.
We know for a fact that the engine sound is excellent and the top-mounted quad exhaust is a sight to behold.
