BMW partnered with renowned artist Jeff Koons to create the 99 units of the 8 Series Gran Coupe which is a work of rolling art. The company calls the vehicle The 8 X Jeff Koons. The automaker will sell the first to charity as part of a Christie’s auction in New York on April 4. Another example will sell for $350,995 after destination in the United States.

All of these special cars started out as the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe. Up front, there’s a yellow front fascia with blue accents under the headlights and white shapes on each side that look like comic book sound effects.

The hood features an intricate pattern of intersecting stripes in shades of blue and gray. The stylish BMW logo is in the center.

Along the way, there are more comic book-inspired touches, including “POP!” at the back door. A depiction of a cloud emerges from the outlet behind the front wheel. The horizontal blue line creates a sensation of speed along the side of the vehicle.

The surprise at the rear is the cartoon-like explosion image on the trunk and rear bumper.

The interior is also lively with a mix of red and bright blue upholstery on the seats. The bottom of the dashboard and floor mats are burgundy. The door panels and carpet are light brown. The cupholder cap plaque identifies the special edition and the Koons signature.

BMW says that building each of these cars requires 11 stages and several hundred man-hours. A dedicated team at the automaker will build two of them per week.

If you want one of Jeff Koons’ The 8 X vehicles for your garage or art collection, BMW is open for pre-orders now in the US. The automaker will also take the engine on a global tour starting with an exhibition at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City from April 1 to 4. People can also see it at Istanbul Contemporary, Paris Photo, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Art Dubai, Shanghai West Bund Art & Design Exhibition, and Art Basel Hong Kong.

Koons previously collaborated with BMW to create the BMW M3 GT2 art car in 2010. This car features bright color stripes on a black background. The machine competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year.
