You’re Invited to Car and Driver’s Second Lightning Wipe Day on October 21

For the past decade and a half, we’ve rented the 4.1-mile Grand Course at Virginia International Raceway for more than a week each year to spin the hottest new performance cars (and sometimes SUVs) on the market. We’ve now run over 300 cars at our Lightning Lap event, which has been a great vantage point to witness and document the dramatic improvement in tire grip and continued travel to faster times.

But it’s a shame this fantastic and challenging Grand Course configuration isn’t usually run during track days, making it difficult to experience it. We’re here to help: As we did in March this year, we’re hosting another track day at the Grand on Friday, October 21, along with NASA and Kaizen Autosport.

Even better this time around is that we’re running this year’s Lightning Lap event earlier in the week, and all track-day attendees are invited to join us the night before, Thursday, October 20, from 5 to 7 p.m., for a tour of the year’s car field. this while enjoying drinks and snacks on us.

As before, cars will be divided into street car and race car classes mimicking our LL1 to LL5 price categories. For $695, you’ll get three 30-minute morning sessions to speed things up, and then two 20-minute time-test sessions in the afternoon to try to post your best time. Each class winner takes home a trophy and a one-year membership for us Track Club (which, among other things, gets you invited to other events throughout the year). Drivers must have a minimum of five HPDEs on any race track to participate.
