The world wasn’t over last week when Ferrari introduced the Purosangue SUV and we’re pretty sure the apocalypse won’t be triggered by the four-cylinder C63. After years of spy shots, rumors, and much controversy, AMG is about to release a thrilling super sedan. The rival BMW M3 and Audi RS4 will finally be unveiled today to show there is still hope for exciting performance cars at the start of the electric era.
The design isn’t much of a mystery as the near-closed production AMG prototype brought earlier this year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed essentially reveals the entirety of the car. The new C63 gets a redesigned bumper with larger air intakes and shares the Panamericana grille with the lighter C43 which was introduced in late April. Other upgrades include a larger trunk lid spoiler and more square exhaust tips flanking the larger diffuser.

Known by its full name as the Mercedes-AMG C63 SE Performance, this high-performance sedan will use the M139 engine of the compact but longitudinally mounted “45” model. The most powerful four-cylinder engine to be put in a series production car, the 2.0-liter factory has been confirmed to get extra horses and a turbocharger with electric spooling. It will work with a rear-mounted electric motor, giving the C63 a conflicting all-wheel-drive setup. with its predecessor RWD. .
To compensate for the inevitable weight gain, the PHEV setup will beat the old V8, especially when it comes to torque. By virtually eliminating the ICE’s dreaded turbo lag and taking advantage of the electric motor’s instant torque delivery, the AMG C63 should be an absolute rocket despite being extra beefy.
We’ll have to see how this elaborate powertrain will help Affalterbach’s hottest C-Class ever battle the M3 Competition xDrive and its larger 3.0-liter inline-six that skipped electrification. Don’t be too surprised if the AMG will be much heavier. Spy shots have revealed a C63 wagon is also on the agenda for the pursuit of the new M3 Touring.
