With the new decree, issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, a big change is about to arrive, 12 years later from the first legislation.

In reality this is not new, because something similar had been in the air for a long time, it was simply waiting for the news to become official.
In Italy, there are already traffic lights for pedestrians and for cars with the countdown. These arrived on April 27, 2017, with the decree of the time that gave the administration the possibility to install these new devices on a completely experimental basis, ready to change the viability on the roads. They are probably not new to the north, but they are to many southern cities.
With traffic lights, more safety for pedestrians and motorists
After the signing of the Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, everything changes and a completely new legislation comes into force. This is an important step forward in favor of road safety for pedestrians and cyclists, who are more exposed to risks.

The new traffic lights, as well as those already installed on Italian roads, will be equipped with systems with countdowns that indicate how many seconds are left to red or broke. The goal is to limit accidents at intersections, as most accidents happen right there. With the innovative traffic light they will try to accustom all those who live the street to behave correctly respecting the rules and therefore others as well as themselves.
The result of hard work that lasted at least 10 years
The legislation was born after years of hard work, planning and study. All this began in 2010, the year to which article 60 of law 120 on road safety provisions. Everything now passes to the municipal administrations who will update the traffic lights already installed on the streets. Then we will proceed with the planning of the new installations in the next two years given the approval of the Public Works Program or what has to do with the acquisition of supplies and services.
These traffic lights most likely they will be installed near pedestrian crossings and cycle paths, both inside and outside intersections. The decree includes: a technical annex with all the countdown requirements, then the operating methods and all the installation methods, with the conditions established for their marketing. Regarding this, the work will be carried out in full compliance with national and European standards.
