Hennessey Mammoth TRX Drag Races Powerful Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

High-performance trucks and SUVs are the norm today. There are plenty available from automakers, and aftermarket tuners like Hennessey have been playing in this space for years, creating some truly insane machines. Carwow owns one – the Hennessey Mammoth 1000 TRX – and the publication pits the truck against its other high-powered sibling, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

Both models use the same supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine, but it delivers more power in the truck thanks to Hennessey’s various performance improvements. The TRX now produces 1,026 horsepower (765 kilowatts) and 969 pound-feet (1,314 Newton-meters) of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. The Jeep engine produces significantly less power, but still pumps out 707 hp (527 kW) and 645 lb-ft (875 Nm) of torque. It has all-wheel drive and an eight-speed gearbox as well.

One of the advantages of the Jeep is its weight or lack of it compared to the TRX. The Trackhawk tilts the scales at 5,291 pounds (2,400 kilograms). Hennessey weighs 7,054 lbs (3,200 kg), and it shows in the results.

The first race saw the Jeep rocket off the line with launch control. This put the TRX at a disadvantage it could not overcome, finishing in second place, well behind the Jeep. The second race was closer, with both drivers using launch control this time, but Hennessey still finished second.

The first rolling race, with the vehicle in the most comfortable setting, resulted in TRX’s first win. He was able to get away from the Jeep, securing his victory. However, the joy was short-lived. The second rolling race, with the cars in the sportiest of settings, saw Jeep take its third win, which wouldn’t be the last.

Jeep also won the final brake test, but there isn’t a huge gap between the two competitors. The truck’s off-road tires and extra weight don’t help it, but the Jeep has suffered brake wear. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and Hennessey Mammoth TRX are epic vehicles with great power, and you don’t want to bump into each other on the drag track.
