Opel Zafira-e Life Becomes an Electric Camper Car With a Range of 200 Miles

The number of electric motor homes on the market is increasing rapidly, especially in Europe. Crosscamp Flex, using the Opel Zafira-e Life as a starting point, is the latest on the horizon. A prototype will debut at the 2022 Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, Germany, and sales begin in 2023.

The electric Crosscamp Flex has a 75-kilowatt-hour battery providing a projected WLTP driving range of 200 miles (322 kilometers). The system can charge at 100 kilowatts of direct current and get the van up to 80 percent in 48 minutes.

The Opel-based camper also packs a 95-amp-hour battery to power the lights, fridge, and USB socket. This prevents drawing too much electricity from the package that powers the EV.

Crosscamp Flex retains the amenities you’d expect from a compact motor home. The roof extends to offer more space for the occupants, and there are two bunk beds up there. The rear bench seat is converted into a double bed. There is a kitchenette with a sink and gas stove. The front seats can rotate 180 degrees.

On the road, the van has safety features such as forward collision warning, emergency braking, drowsiness warning, fixed lane assistance and traffic sign recognition with semi-adaptive cruise control.

Crosscamp has yet to offer pricing details for the electric Flex. Later, the company plans to offer an EV version of the Crosscamp Lite, which removes the kitchen to give more space in the vehicle.

The debut of the Crosscamp Flex comes just a day after Renault’s announcement of the amazingly named Hippie Caviar Motel electric van. This model uses a Kangoo van as a base and is equipped with a 120 horsepower (90 kilowatt) electric motor. The 45-kilowatt-hour battery provides an approximate range of 177 miles (285 kilometers) in a WLTP cycle.

Unfortunately, Renault doesn’t provide much detail about the interior amenities of the Hippie Caviar Motel. The back seat folds into a bed. Ski rack does not block the view out panoramic glass panels on the roof.

The company also doesn’t say whether they plan to put this vehicle into production or if it’s just a showcase of what is possible from an electric camper van.
