How To Use Cadillac Lyriq Variable Regen On Demand Function: Video

[ad_1]

The Cadillac Lyriq 2023 has a unique feature called Variable Regen on Demand that helps drivers expand the driving range of new electric vehicles. The luxury marque recently released a video detailing how to operate this feature to take advantage of the energy that would otherwise be wasted during braking.

Those familiar with “regular” Regen on Demand will immediately be familiar with Variable Regen on Demand, as they both work in identical ways, albeit with one notable difference. To get started, Regen on Demand uses an electro-hydraulic system that draws energy from the spinning wheels to reverse the direction of electricity, directing it from the vehicle’s motor back to the battery. In other words, the mechanical energy from the braking action is converted into electrical energy that charges the vehicle battery. Regen on Demand technology is already found in the Chevrolet Bolt EV or Bolt EUV, where the paddle mounted on the steering wheel acts as an on-off switch for the system.

The Variable Regen on Demand system for the Lyriq functions in a similar way, but allows dynamic regenerative braking rather than an all-or-nothing effort. This technology is activated by pulling back on the pressure sensitive pedal located on the left side of the steering wheel. The system detects the position of the paddle and applies the appropriate brake, activating regenerative disconnection. In other words, if the driver pulls the pedal back 50 percent, the Lyriq will apply the regenerative braking function by 50 percent.

In addition to recharging the battery to increase the Lyriq’s driving range, Regen on Demand can also reduce brake component wear. The system can also be used using only the brake pedal, which uses Regen on Demand when braking is lighter, or by engaging single-pedal actuation.

The Cadillac Lyriq will come to a complete stop if the paddle is held at a certain pressure long enough, and the vehicle will remain stationary until the gas pedal is pressed. However, Cadillac notes that paddles should not be used when emergency braking is required. In cases like this, the driver should rely on the brake pedal.
