If you dig deep enough, you’ll find that the roar of the Porsche 911 hybrid is more than a decade old. The 911 hybrid race car did materialize, and it lived up to our expectations as we haven’t released a road version yet. However, that will all change. A 911 hybrid is coming, and its debut may be just around the corner.
Speaking to the press in Italy, including Motor1 Italy, Porsche Italia CEO Pietro Innocenti said that the 911 hybrid, which will arrive before the all-electric derivative, will debut soon. But he did not provide any specifications. It will not be a plug-in hybrid, but will use technology derived from the motorsport and auto divisions such as the 919 Hybrid.

There are no powertrain details about the 911 hybrid, so it’s unclear where it will fall in the model lineup. Porsche says it plans to focus on performance over efficiency with the new powertrain. One rumor circulating suggests that the model can produce around 700 horsepower (521 kilowatts). Spy photos have captured the car without a back seat as well, though it’s unclear if that’s a permanent feature of the hybrid or changes made to development.
Porsche is pretty coy about when we’ll see the hybrid and all-electric version that should follow. In 2017, CEO Oliver Blume revealed that the 911 hybrid would debut alongside the next-generation mid-cycle refresh (today’s 992), so we could be pretty close to seeing the hybrid derivative cover break. The 992-generation Porsche 911 debuted in 2019, so the mid-cycle redesign could arrive in 2023 or 2024. That’s in line with rumors that the hybrid will debut sometime in the middle of the decade.
As Porsche prepares for an all-electric variant, the 911 hybrid will be a stepping stone for the model and the company. Porsche is embracing the technology, and we’ll soon see the all-electric Macan crossover join the all-electric Taycan sedan. The all-electric 911 will take longer to get here, but the hybrid sounds like it will suffice until then.
