RENEW: An anonymous source from Alfa Romeo told Motor1.com that the Tonale has a base price in the high $30,000 range and above in the low $50,000 range.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale 2023 debuted as the Italian brand’s first all-electric model by offering a plug-in-hybrid powertrain in the United States. The compact crossover will arrive in North America in the first quarter of 2023.

Under the tent

In the US, the Tonale will be available with two powertrains. The plug-in hybrid option consists of a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic for turning the front axle. A 121-horsepower (90-kilowatt) electric motor drives the rear wheels. The total system output is 272 hp (203 kW).

The PHEV is equipped with a 15.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. Alfa Romeo estimates the range when running on electric power alone is over 30 miles (48 kilometers). A full charge of the battery takes about 2.5 hours from a level 2 charger.

Another engine option is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 256 hp (191 kW) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque. It goes through a nine-speed automatic to an all-wheel-drive system.

Outside the US, Alfa will offer the Tonale with two 1.5-liter mild hybrid engines. Europe will get a diesel option.

How does it look?

The front of the Tonale features a traditional Alfa shield-shaped grille. Flanking it, there are standard full LED headlights with running lights that create three elements on each side. The tail lights are styled to match the illuminated display at the front. The phone call-style wheel has a look that evokes the classic Alfa.

The table below shows the Tonale’s physical footprint:

Long 178.3 inches (4.53 meters)
Wide 72.4 inches (1.84 meters)
Tall 63.0 inches (1.6 meters)

Tonale’s comes standard with a 12.3-inch digital infotainment cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. This technology runs on the Uconnect 5 software suite which supports over-the-air updates. The system has wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also support for Alexa home-to-car and car-to-home communications with smart devices.

Safety Technology

Tonale comes with a long list of standard security systems. Features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, fixed lane assistance, blind spot monitoring and rear cross lane detection.

As an option, buyers can upgrade to technology that supports level 2 autonomy that adds features such as traffic jam assistance.

Three Models To Choose From

In the US, the Tonale will be available in three trim levels. The Sprint is the entry-level model and comes with only a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Ti in the middle of the lineup is available with a 2.0 or 1.3 liter plug-in hybrid. The highest-reaching Veloce is only available with PHEV. Prices are not yet available.

Tonale As NFT

Alfa Romeo will launch a new program with Tonale where each vehicle will come with a non-fungible token (NFT) which will initially register info such as vehicle color and choice. The owner will take over the NFT upon purchase of the vehicle.

From there, Alfa will be able to update the NFT whenever Tonale is at the dealership for service or maintenance. This will create a digital log of the entire history of the vehicle. At this time, the brand is not disclosing what companies it partnered with to make this NFT.

According to the company, one of the uses of NFT is to increase the residual value of used vehicles because there will be a permanent record of maintenance history.

Owners can opt out of the program if they don’t want info about their Tonale to be tracked with NFT.
