The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a refresh in development in the cold. The engineers covered it with plenty of camouflage, though all signs point to a fairly minor update.
Judging by the horizontal bars on the grille, we see the G550 in these photos, not the G63 in the last batch of spy shots. Camouflage hides a lot, but the size of the opening in the corners of the front fascia is noticeably taller than the current model. The hood seems to be missing the raised part in the middle.

There are only minor changes along the sides of the SUV. Fender flares have a sharper angle at which they bend downwards.
At the rear, it remains largely the same as on the current G-Class. Mercedes might make minor changes to the rear bumper design.
Although there are no spy shots of the cabin yet, it is expected to adopt the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system. This may include enlarging the screen as well.
With the launch for the 2019 model year, the current G-Class isn’t that old. Don’t look for Mercedes to introduce updates for models up to 2023 MY at the earliest. This model set record sales in 2021.
Mercedes is also working to expand the range of the G-Class. A new iteration of 4×4 Squared is in development. It features a much higher ride and new suspension components. The tougher SUV gets a roof rack, and a ladder at the rear makes accessing the gear there an easier job. Some spy shots hint at the light bar on the roof as well.
In 2024, Mercedes will launch an electric version of the G-Class under the name EQG. It will reportedly continue to be a body-on-frame vehicle and will use the 107.8 kilowatt-hour battery from the EQS. A dual motor powertrain will provide all-wheel-drive capability.
