Volvo Reportedly Planning New Electric Crossover Between XC60, XC90

Volvo’s South Carolina plant will be an important hub for the automaker’s electrified future. Both Volvo and Polestar will build the electric model at the site, so there has been a lot of rumors surrounding the plans for the two brands. New report from Automotive News says Volvo will start building a new electric crossover at the plant from early 2025, but few details are known about it.

The publication cites two sources familiar with the company’s plans, although Volvo declined to comment on future products when A reached out to confirm the rumour. The two sources also tell Automotive News that the new crossover, codenamed V546, will be somewhere between the XC60 and XC90 in the Volvo lineup. The new crossover will also feature an advanced driver assistance system while riding the new electric platform.

This is the first time we’ve heard of Volvo working on a crossover that fits between its mid-size and full-size offerings. However, this news comes after earlier rumors suggested that Volvo and Polestar were developing a small electric crossover. We know the two will sit at the bottom of their respective lineups, positioned below the XC60 and XC90, not between them. The new model is expected to adopt styling cues from Volvo’s Concept Recharge crossover.

Volvo is trying an aggressive transition to electric vehicles where it hopes to sell only fully electric cars by 2030. It wants at least half of its sales by mid-decade to be pure EVs as well. If Volvo intends to achieve that, they will need a vehicle to sell, and an additional crossover between the XC60 and XC90, both of which get an all-electric variant with the next generation, will fill its lineup. Both Volvo and Polestar are busy with new electric products that will start rolling off the assembly line next year.
