Subaru BRZ Cup Car Basic Debuts With Small Tweaks To Take It Racing

The 2022 Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 Cup Car Basic models are here to give Japanese drivers an affordable one-make racing series to compete against. The vehicle has modifications to make it safe on the track and increase reliability during circuit laps.

Both vehicles receive a six-point roll cage with guard bars that run horizontally for extra side protection. There are also eye bolts for attaching the seat belt to the driver’s seat. A new floor mat with cutouts to fit around the roll cage is also part of this package.

To increase reliability, the car gets an air-cooled engine oil cooler. The rear differential cover receives cooling fins. Both come with steel wheels.

The powertrain has not changed from road-going version available in Japan. A naturally aspirated 2.4-liter flat four-cylinder engine that produces 232 horsepower (173 kilowatts) and 184 pound-feet (250 Newton-meters). All of these race cars use a six-speed manual.

Subaru is confident that it can sell 30 units of the BRZ Cup Car Basic every year. Toyota’s announcement does not include estimates.

That 2022 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR86/BRZ Cup series will have five races this season. It will begin on July 16, 2022, at Fuji Speedway. Competition will also stop at Sportsland Sugo, Tokachi Speedway, Suzuka Circuit and Okayama International Circuit.

The GR86/BRZ Cup has two classes: Professional and Clubman. As the name implies, the Professional series is for pro drivers, including some who compete in the Super GT. Clubman is for amateurs.

By racing car standards, both vehicles are affordable. After tax, Subaru charges 3,338,500 yen ($28,900 at current exchange rates). Toyota is slightly cheaper at 3,334,000 yen ($28,870). In comparison, the track-only Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport starts at $229,000 before tax in the US.
