Toyota Thinks Most Supra Buyers Will Choose Automatic Over Manual

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Toyota recently, it’s the company listening. A manual gearbox for the Supra has been in demand among enthusiasts and enthusiasts since the fifth-generation model launched in 2019. Despite the fuss the 2023 Supra made when it was announced, Toyota is confident that most Supra buyers will still prefer the automatic over the MT. In an email to DriveToyota North America spokesman Paul Hogard said that only a quarter of Toyota Supra sales will be equipped with the MT.

Confirmation from Hogard is actually in line with market trends. Many companies have announced their intention to ditch the shift stick. Volkswagen confirmed that the MT option would be out in 2030, while Mercedes-Benz said that it would gradually eliminate the manual gearbox by early 2023.

But for a performance brand, this is a mixed bag. Audi has long ditched the MT on its performance cars due to market preference. In contrast, BMW M says that 50 percent of M2 buyers choose the MT, which makes the company promise to keep it for as long as possible.

That said, a quarter of the Supra’s total sales can still be underestimated, but we’ll see. If you’ve been among those who’ve wanted a manual Supra in recent years, it’s time to prove Toyota wrong and buy a red-badged Supra with a manual gearbox derived from the BMW Z4.

Anyway, we’ll see the true score once the new Supra becomes available for purchase in the United States. The 2023 Toyota Supra, including the A91-MT Limited Edition, is expected to arrive later this year at yet-to-be-announced prices. For the record, there will be no price difference between the Supra MT and AT, although the stick-shift will be available exclusively for the six-cylinder version.
