With the next-generation 7 Series and a facelifted 3 Series in the rearview mirror, BMW is now focusing on another equally important sedan. Just like the two cars, the 5 Series will be sold with all types of powertrains: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric. The ICE model will receive a 48V mild hybrid setup to reduce emissions, but the G60 generation luxury sedan will not feature a new engine.
Leading BMW insider inguldyn from Bimmer’s post the forum claims to know about BMW’s original plans for the eighth-generation 5 Series. The executive sedan is likely to go into production in July 2023 and will be sold in the United States in the petrol-fueled 530i variant, joining the pure electric i5 with rear-wheel drive i5 eDrive40 with 335 horsepower and the dual-motor i5 M60 xDrive with 590 hp at the rear. press.

The diesel engine hasn’t died yet as BMW is reportedly looking to sell the new oil-burning 5 Series in Europe as the 520d with and without the xDrive with 195 hp. Some markets will receive the entry-level 520i petrol model with 190 hp, with additional hybrid powertrains to be added in due course. Needless to say, the M5 will be the most powerful of all with a V8 PHEV expected to produce over 700 horsepower to echo the XM Black Label.
There will be some novelty in terms of wagons considering rumors suggest BMW has plans for not only the return of the M5 Touring but also the first-ever i5 Touring. The former appears to be coming to the United States to make up for the absence of the recently launched M3 Touring in Europe. This high-performance plantation is believed to carry the code name G99 and will start production in November 2024.
Meanwhile, the report states BMW will introduce a more advanced Level 3 certified autonomous driving system starting late next year on the 5 Series and 7 Series, but only in Europe and China as US regulations have not kept up with the latest technology. Mercedes has managed to beat BMW to level 3 by receiving certification for the EQS and S-Class sedans.
Elsewhere, China will once again get a 5 Series Sedan (G68) with a long wheelbase with two petrol engines and some i5 models. Production is scheduled to begin in January 2024.
