Whatever happens during the prototype testing phase, it does not indicate the reliability of the next production model. Cars that are in the process of breaking down all the time, and ideally, all issues are resolved before shipping the car to the customer. In some unfortunate cases, the vehicle is far beyond the stage at which it can be salvaged. Something went wrong this week with the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray when the supercar caught fire.
The eerie images that followed showed that it was completely burned, to the point of being beyond recognition. Our friends in motor.es obtained the photos and have been kind enough to share them with us. It’s certainly not a pretty sight, but most importantly no injuries have been reported. The fiery incident occurred while E-Ray was being tested in southern Europe.

It must have been a great fire because it even partially melted the wheel. We know from motor.es that it was one of two prototypes under Bosch supervision, and it was they who initially realized that it had some technical problems. The day before it burned to a crisp, the mid-engined hybrid that gave the best impression of a Ferrari blew smoke at the rear. That’s when the engineers noticed the car had an oil leak.
It didn’t take long for the prototype to lose the newly added oil again. About 24 hours ago, things were going south fast when C8 caught fire and it was too late to save him. Whatever the gear problem, this must be resolved before Chevy begins production of the first Corvette series to have an electric motor.
The E-Ray is expected to retain the V8 engine of the petrol-only Vette, but the LT2 rather than the new LT6 introduced with the hotter Z06. Throwing e-motors into the mix should give American supercars all-wheel drive. Reports state the car will actually have two of these, with both mounted on the front axle. There have been wild rumors claiming the Corvette “Zora” will get a twin-turbo version of the flat-crank Z06 V8 combined with a pair of E-Ray motors, but we may be ahead of ourselves as nothing is official at this point. .
Expect the Corvette E-Ray to arrive for the 2024 model year, meaning an official reveal at some point next year. The Z06 is still hot from the press since pricing was announced just a few weeks ago, so the company with the bow tie crest certainly isn’t looking to steal its thunder any time soon.
