Airstream, REI Collaborate On Special Edition Basecamp Travel Trailer

Airstream, the legendary American caravan manufacturer known for the distinctive shape of its round, polished aluminum carriages, has decided to partner with REI, an outdoor retailer headquartered near Seattle, on a new special edition Basecamp travel trailer. New products are already available to order, although they are not cheap. We’ll cover the price in a moment, but first, let’s see what new features this trailer has.

Basecamp 16 was used as the basis for this new project with a focus on sustainability. Both companies say they use materials and install features that are intentional to enhance sustainability attributes. For example, the fabrics and laminates used in trailers are made from post-consumer recycled materials. In addition, there are cutting board sink covers made from recycled paper and cabinets made from lightweight, sustainably grown wood.

It’s not all about the material, though. REI and Airstream wanted to make travel trailers as efficient and green as possible for off-grid operations. Some of the steps taken include a recirculating water heater, an optional composting toiler, a UV-LED water purification system, and an optional solar panel upgrade for the roof. The latter consists of 360 watt flexible solar panels and a 200 Ah battery pack for use when the trailer is not connected to the power grid.

This special edition travel trailer measures 4.87 meters (16 ft) long and features a convertible dining table and lounge that can quickly convert into a bed that can comfortably accommodate two adults. REI supplies custom 25-piece product kits with items such as comfortable chairs, picnic table and bench covers, kitchenware, and other accessories from its catalog.

“This unique Basecamp travel trailer has helped us step into new territory and explore more sustainable manufacturing practices and materials as we work to prioritize caring for the environment,” commented Airstream president and CEO Bob Wheeler. “Through this partnership with REI, Airstream is proud to offer a model that includes recycled materials, as well as features to help customers camp longer by conserving valuable resources like water.”
