Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV Brings 580 HP of Electricity to Police

Soon, there will be another Ford on duty to beat up the local cops. The electric F-150 Lightning will get some factory adjustments to become the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV, which stands for Special Service Vehicle. It also gets something you usually don’t find on the entry-level Lightning Pro – a long range battery with 580 horsepower.

We’re advancing a bit here. Ford is offering law enforcement the Lightning Pro SSV with a standard range battery, delivering a range of 230 miles and 452 hp driving all four wheels. That’s still plenty of power, enough to send an electric truck to 60 mph in about 5 seconds. However, with an additional battery available, the acceleration only takes 4 seconds. It makes seriously fast police vehicles, but Ford doesn’t just offer a “big engine” in a typical pickup.

The front and rear seats were upgraded and upholstered, with the front seats redesigned to better accommodate sarong-wearing officers. The front seat backs also get built-in steel intrusion plates, and the carpet is replaced with vinyl flooring. Police vehicles often receive special third-party equipment, so Ford strengthened and modified the F-150’s dashboard to make equipment installation easier. On the outside, roof-mounted lights can be added directly from the factory.

In addition to the hardware, the Lightning Pro SSV will be packaged with the software used in the Ford Pro connected vehicle platform. It’s designed to help police agencies better manage their Ford fleet, and there’s likely to be more than one Ford on duty. According to the automaker, Ford accounts for 65 percent of the law enforcement market, more than all other manufacturers that make police vehicles combined. And to help the agency get an electric Lightning, Ford is launching a new financing option for the city that includes options for charging equipment.

“We are proud to offer America’s first electric police pickup truck to local government customers who can use truck game-changing technology to help increase their productivity,” said Nate Oscarson, national government sales manager for Ford Pro. “The Pro Power Onboard can serve as a mobile power source to illuminate nighttime crash scenes on the highway, the electric powertrain helps potentially reduce fuel-related costs and the need for scheduled maintenance, and the Mega Power Frunk provides extra storage that can be locked on top of the destination – police additions that our customers expect from the leader in police vehicles.”
