We all know that motorhomes, camper trailers, and above-ground adventures have made great progress in recent years. People are embracing nomadic life all over the place, though we’ve never seen anyone drop a camper trailer on a narrow sandbar in the middle of a busy river.
Apparently, people near Evansville, Indiana haven’t seen it either. The local news station reported the old camper had just appeared on a sandbar on the Ohio River on July 21, with no clue as to how he got there. Other than that, there’s no indication of who owns it or whether it’s habitable. Several videos posted to YouTube show the outside of the camper, which certainly looks like better days. Nothing appeared about the inside, and no one seemed to live there.
However, camping on a strange river attracts attention. This sandbar is located on the somewhat popular section of the Ohio River right next to Evansville, a city with a population of 118,000 people. Because of this, people flock to the beach and take boats to the sandbars to see the curious camper firsthand. As of posting this article on July 27, it’s still around and no one has claimed responsibility.
Maybe it’s because government agencies are investigating the matter. The US Army Corps of Engineers is looking into possible violations of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899, particularly with regard to structures that could become obstructions on rivers. If that wasn’t bad enough, this section of the Ohio River serves as the border between Indiana and Kentucky. Accordingly, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are investigating the matter. Even the US Coast Guard was involved.
However, the general public does not seem to mind his presence in the river. That could be because this isn’t actually the first time something has mysteriously appeared in a sand dune. 14 News someone said managed to park the pickup truck at the same location five years ago, filling tires with helium to cross the river.
