Ford Mustang GT Drag Races Mustang Mach-E GT: V8 Versus EV

We know, we know. Ford Mustang Mach-E isn’t it real Mustang, you say. Except for many people with data showing the electric crossover sold its combustion-powered sibling within months of its market launch. But what if practicality and design are not your top priorities, but performance? Let’s find out.

Team at carwow put together two of the most powerful and fastest factory Mustangs – the Mustang Mach-E GT and the Mustang GT. Remember, there are also gas-powered Mustangs branded Shelby but different types. The two vehicles meet in a direct drag race and there is no doubt that the race will be exciting. But first, let’s look at the numbers.

The Mach-E GT has two electric motors for a combined peak output of 487 horsepower (358 kilowatts) and 634 pound-feet (860 Newton-meters) of instant torque. Power reaches all four wheels and there is no gearbox. This high-performance electric crossover weighs 4,846 pounds (2,198 kilograms).

Against it, the Mustang GT uses a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine with 450 hp (331 kW). However, this is a slightly modified version of the pony car, it has 490 horses (360 kW) under the hood and 391 lb-ft (530 Nm) of torque. All that power reaches the rear wheels via a 10-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The coupe is lighter than the crossover EV at 3,836 lbs (1,740 kg).

As you can see, although the combustion Mustang has the advantage in terms of power and weight, it is driven only by its rear wheels, which translates to traction problems. The Mach-E GT is heavier but its all-wheel drive should provide plenty of traction when the pedal hits the floor.

We’re not going to tell you the outcome of this drag race – it’s actually a series of drag races – but we can say that it’s one of the closest we’ve seen in recent times. Does that mean the Mach-E GT is a genuine Mustang? We’re not here to judge but one thing we do know is the pace he deserves.
