There are very few similarities between the Toyota Supra and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Both cars have engines in the front-wheel drive at the rear, and this particular vehicle runs an eight-speed automatic transmission. At first glance, it seems many of similarities. But we all know that Toyota has no chance in straight line racing. However, here it is.
If you happen to have no idea what’s going on under the hood of these cars, here’s a refresher. The Challenger SRT Hellcat packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that, in this particular year and spec, makes 707 horsepower (527 kilowatts). As for the Supra, the stock model with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is good for 382 hp (285 kW), or 335 hp (250 kW) in the 2020 model.
In this case, supply irrelevant as the Supra shown here was modified to around 500 hp (373 kW). The Hellcat is stock, but still has a 200-hp (149-kW) advantage over the Toyota. Then again, the two-seat Supra is much lighter at around 3,300 pounds compared to the beefy 4,400 at Dodge. It’s a very familiar tale of weight-versus-strength, but this time, the differences culminate in some very close races. From traffic jams, anyway.
We were treated to three dig races and three throw shots, and both riders were ready to fight. The first race saw Supra whip the Challenger out of line, but Hellcat’s insane power was unstoppable. It was a past cost to claim victory for American muscle, but the Supra wasn’t too far behind.
This is where it gets really interesting. The second race saw the Supra jump to a very healthy lead. It’s definitely better at launch and traction management, but this time the screaming six pots managed to hold the Hellcat long enough to cross the finish line first. And we mean only – the other eye blinks and the Supra will see the Challenger’s taillights. It wasn’t a coincidence either, as the third dig race saw both cars cross the line in the heat. Drag racing doesn’t get much better than this.
Things are not competitive enough from the roll. With Challenger’s mobs already moving, he easily pulls away from the Supra in every fight. That’s the wise words of Toyota fans. Head to the drag strip and take advantage of your excess weight if you want to challenge the Hellcat. Also, a few power boosts wouldn’t hurt either.
