DeLorean Alpha5 is happening. It debuted in late May, promising 300 miles of range and impressive performance from its electric powertrain. Only 88 will be produced, but will there be more DeLorean models to be produced? Prior to the debut of the Alpha5, DeLorean Motor Company CEO Joost de Vries mentioned another concept. Now, we’re looking at Alpha2, Alpha3, and Alpha4, albeit in a slightly odd way.
Go to the DeLorean website and you’ll find a section labeled “our trips”. A click or tap will take you on a journey back through time, which we admit is a bit cheeky considering DeLorean’s iconic bond with Back to the future franchise. Then again, if you want to show a bunch of new DeLorean concept vehicles to the public, getting creative with an alternative automotive timeline is the new way to do it.
DeLorean Alpha2
And that’s exactly what rebooted companies did, starting with the 1990s DeLorean Alpha2. Envisioned as a “complete departure from the legacy DMC-12 design,” we’d be lying if we said we didn’t see the feel of a C4 Corvette in this little coupe. Perhaps it was done on purpose, as DeLorean put it, the Alpha2 was launched in 1996 at the end of the C4 generation, using an internal combustion engine of unknown power. Of course, it’s all part of the fictional timeline used in presenting these concepts. Lest we forget, the original DMC went bankrupt in 1982.
DeLorean Alpha3
The Alpha3 is a futuristic sedan from the mid-2000s, arriving in 2006 per the DeLorean alternate universe. Not only is its styling unlike any other sedan of its era, but its electric powertrain beats Tesla by six years. Naturally, there are two large gullwing doors for front and rear passengers, although the flat roof with the truncated rear gives off a fastback or wagon versus sedan vibe.
DeLorean Alpha4
This is the DeLorean SUV you’d expect. We are now in 2013 in the DeLorean evolutionary timeline where electricity is still driving the wheels, but in the Alpha4 it comes from hydrogen fuel cells. We didn’t say much about the design, except for the standard doors for the front with gullwings for the rear. That is, too flashy similar to the Fisker Ocean in profile view, for better or for worse.
DeLorean DMC-24
There’s one more concept that’s actually part of the DeLorean real-life legacy. The DMC-24 was designed in 1982 as a sleek wedge-shaped four-seater sedan, and it even made it to the mock-up stage. It was the original Alpha, but with the company going bankrupt that same year, development never progressed further.
Now, the big question is whether these new concepts will exist outside of rendering. Back in April, a DMC spokesperson confirmed to Motor1.com that some cars will be shown at Pebble Beach. It could be interpreted as a real-life version of each of the concepts depicted here, or some Alpha5 version, or some kind of combination. DeLorean has stated that the company wants to become a full-line automaker, so it’s likely we’ll see something other than Alpha5 on Pebble. We should know in less than a month, because the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance takes place on August 21.
