In a study conducted by JD Power, we can look at the impact of gas prices on new car owner satisfaction. The increase in fuel prices means that new-vehicle owners are less satisfied with their purchases when compared to 2021. This is the first decline in overall satisfaction since 2014 and only the fifth decline recorded in the study’s 27-year history. Although owners of gas-powered cars show decreased satisfaction, how do they compare to owners of BEVs and hybrids?
JD Power APPEAL focuses on the emotional excitement of drivers when they get their new vehicle. Vehicles that offer their owners a pleasant driving experience or represent aspirational goals usually score well on this metric. According to JD Power, “The APEAL study asked owners to consider 37 attributes, ranging from the comfort they feel when they climb into the driver’s seat to the joy they get when they step on the gas pedal.”
For the 2022 study, timing is everything as gas prices have skyrocketed. According to the avid Amodeo of JD Power, global automotive director at JD Power, “the most important factor causing the industry’s downturn this year is the owner’s perception of the fuel economy of their vehicles.” It’s important to note that overall new gas-powered vehicle satisfaction is down just 1 point on a 1,000-point scale.
The gap between the satisfaction of buyers of luxury cars and mass market cars has widened significantly from year to year. In 2021 the difference was only 19 points, but in 2022 this gap has grown to an astonishing 31 points.
While fuel economy plays a factor in internal combustion vehicle satisfaction, BEVs and hybrids are not particularly affected. In fact, BEVs still underperform when compared to traditional gas-powered vehicles with an average score of 838 compared to 846. PHEVs score 835 while normal hybrids score 832.
JD Power analyzes Tesla with its own metrics as its huge market share will affect the results and passionate Tesla owners beat gas powered vehicles with an impressive 887 score.
