Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray Spied Preview the Future of Hybrid

[ad_1]

There were several tests of the undercover Chevrolet Corvette C8 development vehicle at the Nürburgring. Our spies suspect that this is a hybrid-assisted E-Ray model.

Surprisingly, neither of these Corvettes has the hybrid sticker needed to test electric vehicles around the ‘Ring. Although, these decals are only needed when actually on the track, which might explain their absence.

One of the models has what looks like an external kill switch on the driver’s side front fender.

This vehicle mostly uses the body of the Corvette Z06, including the lower fascia and side holes. However, this vehicle does not have a sporty center-exit exhaust. Instead, there is a ‘regular Vette layout with a pair of outlets on each side

This setup makes sense as the E-Ray is reportedly sharing the 6.2-liter V8 of the standard Corvette version. The electric motor will supposedly rotate the front axle, making it the first all-wheel Vette available from the factory. Rumors suggest the total power output of this system could be between 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) and 650 hp (484 kW). Acceleration to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) may be as fast as two seconds.

Only the electric motor is said to be capable of propelling the E-Ray at 25-35 miles per hour (40-56 kilometers per hour).

A rumor suggests that the E-Ray will replace the Corvette Grand Sport in the vehicle lineup. In the past, the GS has occupied a place in the model hierarchy above the base model but below the Z06.

The Corvette E-Ray is reportedly arriving in 2023. However, we might see it later this year. With the Z06, Chevy debuted its model in October 2021 and has just announced pricing.

After the E-Ray, the Corvette range will reportedly expand to include the ZR1 which will allegedly sport a twin-turbo version of the Z06’s 5.5-liter V8 and will produce around 850 hp (634 kW). Then, the Zora could potentially combine a hybrid and twin-turbo V8 to produce 1,000 hp (746 kW).
