February 6, 1911. That date marked the official birth of what is arguably the most iconic hood ornament in automotive history. Of course, the Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy isn’t just a bonnet decoration – it’s the embodiment of the forward-thinking elegance of the renowned British brand. Or something like that. And now there’s a new version for the all-electric future.
Don’t worry, Rolls-Royce purists. This modern Spirit of Ecstasy is still very recognizable as the familiar figure who graced the veil for more than a century. The wings (actually, those are feminine figurine robes) still flowing with the wind. His stance is still firm, facing forward with a gleaming finish. However, take a close look, and you will see that this Spirit of Ecstasy is not standing as tall as before. Instead, the figure crouched down with legs bent and one slightly in front. Her body now leans forward aggressively, creating what Rolls-Royce calls the “true goddess of speed.”
The practical aspect of this change is better aerodynamics. This new figure is a bit shorter, and the shape shouldn’t be too wind-resistant. That matters when it comes to electric vehicles, that’s where the new Spirit of Ecstasy will come into play. Fine tuning of even the smallest detail for less wind resistance translates to better vehicle range, and Rolls-Royce tells us that the upcoming Specter EV already scores a drag coefficient of 0.26.

While the new statue debuts now, it will be a while before we see it in vehicles. The current Spirit of Ecstasy will remain a figurine for Rolls-Royce models that use internal combustion power. New versions will appear on future electric vehicles, starting with the Specter which will debut in 2023.
