Richard Hammond must be old. He has a history of having extremely fast and extreme engines, but lately, he’s been focusing on vehicles that are more practical, economical, and easy to use. And his latest daily driver is completely unexpected, to say the least.
Hammond featured in new driving tribe a video where he shows off his new vehicle. It’s not a fast sports car or a luxury limousine, for example, but a rather modest Ford Transit Custom van. But why, you may ask? Because he needs something to run his new business because he now owns a shop that restores classic vehicles.
Hammond admits that driving a modern van feels like driving a really nice car from about 15 years ago. Handling is good, the cabin is comfortable with satellite navigation and automatic climate control, and there’s plenty of room to carry your belongings. For Hammond, however, a van is also a time machine.

He found a job where he had to deliver furniture with the new Renault Traffic. He was so excited to take command of a new vehicle that he got a book to learn more about how to explore the new engine.
Hammond describes himself as a recreational van driver, not a professional van driver. In the video, he also tells how he used the Renault Traffic as a camper car over the weekend and why he has such a strong relationship with vans in general. But most of all, driving a van reminds Hammond that driving is mostly about getting you and your stuff from where you are to where you want to be. And a van is specially designed for that.
