Hyundai Veloster N Plug-In Hybrid Spy, But Could Be Something Else


Every now and then, we receive a series of spy shots that leave us scratching our heads. While this may look like the Veloster N, it could actually be something completely different. Notice the aero elements on the wheels? They don’t exist in the production hot hatchback, which also doesn’t have the little sticker on the quarter window that says: “fahrzeug mit hochvolttechnik.” That’s German for “vehicles with high-voltage technology”.

Upon closer inspection, we see black bands running along the side skirts to hide the cables going inside. It’s the same story with the roof as more tape is used to hide the cables going into the cab. The front air intake on the driver’s side seems to serve a functional role rather than being a simple piece of plastic as it does on the other side.

The most noticeable change is the extra cap located next to the fuel filler. The box is rather round and looks out of place, probably there to protect the charging port. We firmly believe that Hyundai is testing vehicles with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The thick dual exhaust tips and visible exhaust under the car confirm there is ICE under the hood.

Such a design with two fuel caps sitting side by side would never fly in a production car, which leads us to believe this is a test mule for a different vehicle. After all, reports from the South Korean state of Hyundai are ending production of the Veloster and its hot N derivative this month due to poor demand, so it makes no sense to engineer a third generation.

Assuming it’s not the Veloster N, what else is it? Perhaps Hyundai is already testing a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the next-generation Kona N. Adding an electric motor can provide all-wheel drive crossover performance, with a combustion engine driving the front axle and an e-motor driving the rear wheels. .

Of course, this is all pure speculation on our part as there are no details about this mysterious N Veloster stature test mule. If the new Konda N is indeed going the PHEV route, it will likely have over 300 horsepower considering how today’s model offers 286 hp when overboost mode is activated for 20 seconds.
