The new unofficial renderings we covered earlier today paint a pretty picture of what the new Toyota Tacoma will look like when it arrives for the 2024 model year. Those are all very important, but the truck will receive more than just a new design with the next-generation model. Pickups will also go up on the new platform.
Toyota will build the next-generation Tacoma with the new TNGA-F body-on-frame architecture. The new platform will also support the next generation 4Runner and the new Hilux. Toyota already uses it to prop up the new Tundra, which brings us back to the new Tacoma because the truck doesn’t sport its own body panels.

According to our spy photographer, the Tacoma caught testing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was wearing a modified Tundra body. The new photos show the truck sporting slightly less camouflage than we’ve seen before, revealing the Tacoma to feature a Tundra grille, mirrors, and double-cab configuration. The Tacoma will feature a shorter wheelbase than the Tundra, which can be a foot shorter.
The new spy shots don’t capture the interior, but there’s enough of the dashboard visible to see Toyota trying to hide it. A spy video from late last month caught a glimpse of the truck’s interior, and it looks like it could have received a larger infotainment screen. It should also borrow cabin styling cues from the Tundra.
Rumors suggest that Toyota will keep its current lineup of truck powertrains and add a hybrid to the mix. That means a 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter army V6 for a few more years. We also hope that the electric truck concept that Toyota revealed late last year will arrive as a production model eventually, possibly joining the Tacoma lineup for the 2025 model year.
Our spy photographer believed that we would see the actual prototype before the end of the year, but that would come too late. That means we’ll likely get a production vehicle debut sometime in 2023. Production won’t start until December 2023, so Toyota has plenty of time to plan its reveal.
