Industry-wide vehicle quality has declined in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the various supplier issues stemming from it, but that’s not the case for Cadillac. In fact, the luxury brand is ranked eighth out of 34 car brands included in the JD Power 2022 Preliminary Quality Study (IQS).
The study was conducted between February and May 2022, in which 84,165 tenants and buyers of 2022 model year vehicles were surveyed in the early stages of ownership. Participants were asked to report any issues they experienced with their vehicle through a 223-question survey, which focused on several key areas in vehicle performance including infotainment; features, controls and views; the outside part; driving assistance; interior; powertrains; seat; driving experience; and climate.
The industry average is 180 issues reported per 100 vehicles (PPH), up significantly from the average of 162 issues reported in 2021.
In comparison, Cadillac outperformed the industry average, with owners of new vehicles made by the luxury brand reporting 163 issues per 100 vehicles. This is a significant decrease from responses collected the previous year, where an average of 173 problems were reported per 100 vehicles. In fact, Cadillac outperformed nearly all of its major rivals, including the Lincoln (167 PPH), Mercedes-Benz (189), Acura (192), Infiniti (204), and Audi (239). Cadillac performed slightly worse than Lexus, with an average of 157 issues reported.
Cadillac’s high initial quality levels in the study suggest that the luxury brand is skilled at building high-quality vehicles despite the many supply chain issues, scarce microchip supplies, and labor shortages plaguing the auto industry as a whole. Quite a number of the marque’s luxury vehicles are recognized for their high initial level of quality and high ratings in their respective competitive segments. It’s also worth noting that almost all the brands under the umbrella of Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors, showed improved performance in this year’s study, and all of them were in the top eight.
