BMW 3.0 CSL Drag Race Replica Electric Tuned Ford Mustang GT

The Ford Mustang is a threat on the drag strip, but a new video from Carwow shows how new technology in an old package can make up for it. His latest drag racing video pits a tuned Ford Mustang GT with an all-electric BMW 3.0 CSL replica.

The automaker’s naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 powers the Ford Mustang, but has been tuned by Clive Sutton. Instead of the usual 450 horsepower (335 kilowatts), the engine now produces 490 hp (365 kW). Torque remains unchanged at 390 pound-feet (530 Newton-meters). The extra power comes from new intakes, a new exhaust and an updated ECU. Ford sends the car’s power to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

BMW is not your typical classic. The car has a Tesla-sourced powertrain, with a 3.0 CSL replica packing a Tesla Large Drive Unit and Tesla battery. The drive unit is capable of producing approximately 450 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. However, Electric Classic Cars had to lower its output as the car would only fit certain sized rear tires, so the car produced around 300-350 hp (223-260 kW).

BMW and Ford first competed in a pair of drag races. BMW won both, with the Mustang losing half the length of the car in the second race. However, BMW was able to keep the Mustang behind, crossing the finish line in 12.7 seconds. Ford was right behind him with a time of 12.8 seconds.

The two then competed in a pair of rolling races. The Mustang’s transmission remained in automatic mode for the first fight, and couldn’t win. BMW pulled away with the Mustang failing to pull it back before the half mile marker. The second rolling race with the Mustang gearbox in different manual mode. The Ford gearbox quickly shifted into a lower gear, allowing the Mustang to advance and win one drag race.

The last contest between the two was the brake test, and the Mustang won this one by a lot. BMW has a modern powertrain and upgraded brakes but lacks the anti-lock-brake system. Maybe that improvement will come later because we want to see a rematch.
