Depending on where you live, the Mitsubishi L200 might be called a Triton or Strada in your country. It’s also a Fiat Fullback or Ram 1200, and with the next-gen model, will probably be linked to other trucks. The Mk6 model is believed to be combined with the Navara to help the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance maximize efficiency by launching a global unified platform for their workhorse in this segment.
The Navara itself is no stranger to derivatives, which have been used as the basis for the now-defunct Renault Alaska and Mercedes X-Class. Even if these two cars were to share an architecture, it’s expected that their exterior and interior designs will differ substantially in the same vein as the new VW Amarok/Ford Ranger. The L200 was first captured as a test mule earlier in the year before our spies spotted a prototype with the production body last week.
The mid-sized truck has now lost all its camouflage due to the speculative rendering of our friends at College. While it’s not immediately apparent in the spy shots, the guy with the camera told us that the prototype carries a longer wheelbase. A mix of petrol and diesel engines is expected to depend on the market, while a plug-in hybrid seems like an educated guess with Europe’s strict emissions regulations.
We didn’t expect major design changes as the mid-cycle refresh of the current model in late 2018 had made the L200 look like a brand new truck. The updated variant gave birth to the Triton Absolute concept hinting at a potential Ranger Raptor rival, which never really happened. It could come with a next-generation model as Mitsubishi’s head of design Seiji Watanabe has promised that the overhauled truck will be tougher.
The overhauled L200 is reportedly locked for a 2022 release, but the coronavirus pandemic has delayed the pickup’s world premiere until early 2023. The Nissan Navara equivalent is likely not far behind.
