Getting behind the wheel of the new Lexus LX in Japan could take up to four years as Toyota’s luxury division struggles to keep up with demand. Automotive News reports that customers have had to wait a long time as it may take up to 48 months to get their hands on a full-size SUV. In an effort to reduce the backlog, Lexus has temporarily stopped accepting orders in its domestic market. Fortunately, US shoppers can still order them, although supplies are limited.
The smaller NX is also popular in the Land of the Rising Sun, so new orders will be filled in just over 12 months from now. Lexus no longer accepts the demand for a compact luxury crossover at home. Its parent company, Toyota, has made a similar decision for the less luxurious LX model, the Land Cruiser 300. However, there is more to the demand than these models enjoy.

Toyota has repeatedly published press releases about plans to halt production at some of its plants in Japan due to a lack of necessary components. Not necessarily a shortage of chips, but supply constraints caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which are still affecting the carmaker’s day-to-day operations.
For July, Toyota/Lexus told its suppliers earlier in the year that they needed to produce 800,000 units globally, with 250,000 in Japan and the remaining 550,000 overseas. However, global production plans have been reduced by about 50,000 vehicles due to the ongoing parts shortage.
Toyota hopes to ramp up production in the coming months by planning to assemble 850,000 cars on average per month for the July to September period. However, the Japanese automaker remained cautious and said the number could be reduced due to missing semiconductors and the impact COVID-19 still had on the auto industry.
Although Toyota has lost about 400,000 vehicles since the fiscal year began on April 1, that doesn’t change its forecast for the entire fiscal year of around 9.7 million cars. This shows that the company is determined to withdraw all layoffs and stick to its original plan. If successful, Toyota (and Lexus) will set a new annual production record.
